Cubs camp notes: Tyler Austin sidelined by knee surgery; Bregman sets tone, Taillon tabs Cactus opener
An early blow at first base: Tyler Austin will undergo knee surgery and is expected to be out until late May, pushing the Cubs to weigh internal bench coverage that could include Christian Bethancourt and Miguel Amaya in emergency roles and to add veteran depth with Michael Conforto on a Minor League deal [1].On the positive side of the diamond, Alex Bregman has brought power and presence to workouts, setting a standard around the cages and in meetings [2]. Jameson Taillon is lined up to start the Cactus League opener, while Edward Cabrera has drawn praise as he refines his timing and sequencing working with catchers Carson Kelly and Amaya [2].Chairman Tom Ricketts underscored the bar for 2026, framing the goal as a division crown and a run to the World Series [2].
